My Little Helpers Page

Hi all,

The time has come where i want my Comp to be faster and i think i could do a lot by adding more memory. However, it's a notebook and there's only one 64MB on board and a *single* slot where i can put 128MB at max. So i have 192MB for some weeks now and while it's an improvement over 128, it's not as great as i thought. So i thought how about freeing up some memory and i went to look at how much memory my apps need.
Coming to think of it, i found out that i can even have many of my tools resident and still use less memory than before - if only i use the right tools.

So here's a list of my little helpers. With the emphasis on *little* this time:

recent additions - not yet included in the details below are:
Robin Keir's IP2 and Neutron as well as
bloatbusters' dns2ip (is free but on the other hand does not contain as many features as e.g. xpt's spike, CyberKit (also free) or SamSpade (also free)...

Proxomitron 393.2k 313k This is the best and most comfortable http proxy - allowing you to re-program everything before it gets into your browser (like, change every "copyright" in a webpage to "copywrong".

Tips & Tricks

Cheap Tricks Central and Windows Registry Guide are two sites with several nice tricks...

Print a listing of all files contained within a directory.

  1. Make a Batch file "printdir.bat" with the following contents: (z.B. C:\WIN95) eine Batch-Datei"printdir.bat", die folgendem Inhalt hat: @echo off Dir "%1" > %2 and save it in the windows directory.
  2. In Explorer (View | Options) search for the "folder" or "directory" entry and open it with a double-click.
  3. Click on "New..." Now make a new entry and call it like "Directory as Txt" or so, in application enter c:\win95\printdir.bat %1 c:\win95\dirlist.txt then click ok.
  4. Repeat the previous step, but call the entry like "Directory to Printer" or so and in the application-field enter c:\win95\printdir.bat %1 LPT1 .
  5. That was it, now you can right-click on folders and select the above functions. The folder's contents will be either printed or written to the file "dirlist.txt" in the windows directory.

Symbolic links to special entities

Maybe you've heard of some mail worms bypassing security measures by using CLSID's instead (or rather as) extensions, but did you know that wherever you can create a file, this can be an instance of "My Computer", your printer folder or a few of those special entities. Just create a file and give it the corresponding CLSID as extension. Examples: (the name before the dot doesn't matter you can call it anthing you like as long as you keep the extension unchanged.)

Right click menu entries

are sorted in the order of their generation. So, to place sth. at the end rename it (first temporary, then back)!

Entries in the New... Menu

When you right-click on your desktop or other selected applications there is a New sub-menu which contains a list a default templates. In most environments this list contains all sorts of document types you rarely ever use, but it can be modified to include only the templates you want.
Each template exists in the [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT] hive associated with a file extension.
Whether it is visible or not in the New menu is controlled by whether the related entry has a sub-key called 'ShellNew'.
For example on the New menu there is usually an entry for "Text Document". This is visible because of the key: [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.txt\ShellNew] If you were to rename the key so it no longer had a sub-key called 'ShellNew' by changing it to [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.txt\ShellNewOld] it would disappear from the New menu.
  1. Open Regedit, and using the Find function (Ctrl+F) search for any values of 'ShellNew'.
  2. Several should be found under the [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT] hive, if you do not want them to be displayed rename 'ShellNew' to 'ShellNewOld'.

Execute system commands from a commandline/link

There is this rundll.exe (or rundll32.exe) that calls specific commands buried in dll's. Now you can use a commandline (or use this commandline in a link on the Desktop, in the Startmenu or the Quicklaunch Folder (or in MyWonderfulIcon)):
Dial a Dial-Up Connection
RUNDLL32.EXE rnaui.dll,RnaDial ConnectionName
Open a URL in your default browser
RUNDLL32.EXE url.dll,FileProtocolHandler http://www.basicworld.com
Open a telnet connection to a spec. server
RUNDLL32.EXE url.dll,TelnetProtocolHandler 194.45.127.79
Open your default mailer with a mail to a spec. adress
RUNDLL32.EXE url.dll,MailToProtocolHandler Service@www.basicworld.com
Shutdown windows
RUNDLL.EXE user.exe,exitwindows
Restart windows
RUNDLL.EXE user.exe,exitwindowsexec
Restart windows after a 15 second delay
runonce.exe -q
Actually there is a more sophisticated way to handle logging on/off or shutting down etc:
rundll32.exe shell32.dll,SHExitWindowsEx n where n is one, or a combination of, the following numbers: The above options can be combined into one value to achieve different results. For example, to restart Windows forcefully, without querying any running programs, use the following command line: rundll32.exe shell32.dll,SHExitWindowsEx 6

Start menu order

I have put my most important programs (at least those which i don't launch via My wonderful icon) into the topmost level of the startmenu and have numbered them (like "0 - Explorer", "3 - TDS-3"). So i can control their order and i can launch them with just a click on the windows key and a number key.
